The Government of Australia has repeatedly asserted that Julian Assange has broken no Australian law: why not name him Honourary Consul in an Australian city where Ecuador has no representation at present, say Adelaide or Brisbane, and issue him a diplomatic passport on that basis? Under the terms of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, if I'm not mistaken, not only could he go home, if he so desired: he could not be detained at all!
